A VINTAGE ASAFO FLAG

A vintage Asafo flag, Ghanaian, the whole with typical appliquéd design including a Union Jack, figures and a plane in flight – all against a shell pink ground with lilac, yellow, tangerine, red, forest green, black and ecru detailing – with cut work borders originally designed to flutter in the breeze – bespoke wood frame, glazed and the borders of the flag stretched.  In good condition, natural wear with typical rustic construction and stitch work.

The flags of the Fante people use unique and naive images that identify different military companies called ‘Asafo’ – with an animal image of power or a confrontational proverb to threaten other rival companies.

These flags make wonderfully quirky, colourful talking points.  A large and very decorative piece!
